top of the heap
In our effort to reduce our household’s contribution to the earth-choking mass that is our local landfill, we’ve moved almost entirely to reusable bags for groceries and errands. And because I’m, um, a bit of a product junkie, I’ve tried them all: the recycled plastic versions from Whole Foods, tacky canvas versions collected as freebies from various conferences, netted versions with handles, and versions made from salvaged curtain fabric (which I do recommend, especially for carrying small loads, like a couple of bottles of wine or a bag of fruit).
But for heavy lifting, I’ve become devoted to my Skeeda bag: made from heavy-duty–but surprisingly lightweight!–canvas, one of these totes has enough room for several bottles, three or four cans, a loaf of bread, and a few boxes. They also hang an extra-long strap, which is way more comfy when you’re toting a big load. Did I mention that they fold completely flat, and hey! they’re also really cute?
And this week, we’re giving a happy-patterned Skeeda bag away to one lucky reader. Simply leave a comment on this post, describing one thing you do to make your world a greener place. One winner will be chosen at random.
ETA: Extra entries given if you a) visit Skeeda’s site, choose your favorite bag, and post here about it; b) tweet a link to this post (please leave link in this post’s comments so we can verify); c) link to this post on your blog (again, please leave a link here for verification). Don’t forget that you need to leave a separate comment for each of these so that we have accurate numbers for the random drawing. Thanks!
the fine print:
Comments will be closed and entries will not be accepted after 11:59 pm EST on Sunday, February 22 , 2009. The winner will be selected on Monday, February 23, 2009, and notified by e-mail. Results of the giveaway will be announced on Monday, February 23, 2009. Multiple entries will not be accepted, and previous giveaway winners are not eligible. My gf and I recycle EVERYTHING! We try to repurpose it at home first (Using plastic bags to clean the cats liter box with, cutting up all old cardboard containers to use as packing materials for my paper goods, keeping old plastic/glass jars to hold craft items in)…but we also do all the little things like leaving almost all the lights off in the house 24/7, unplugging electrical items not in use and she’s ALWAYS on me about making sure the faucet is turned off when I’m brushing my teeth

My bf and I use reusable bags whenever we’re shopping somewhere that only has plastic. Where paper bags are available, we take them to use as our trash bags. This way we’re not ensconcing our trash in plastic once it reaches the landfill.
I like your eggshell bag best, by the way.

I also use my own shopping bags! I also use a glass at work everyday for water, instead of bottled water. And… we recycle all paper and plastic that comes into our home.

I make many things, but the bigger is the bakery cafe i’m opening with my boyfriend. All the stuff inside will be used (ovens, tables, plates, etc.) and we’ll use organic flour and many other organic ingredients. We live in a small town, so we bought a car, what we didn’t own before. The good thing is that we live just upstairs the bakery, so the car is not very often in function!

Switch off the lights in the rooms I’m not in.

We try to turn off water and lights as much as possible. We’ve turned down out heat in the winter. I use reusable shopping bags. We’ve switched all our lightbulbs to greener ones, and we recycle. We also buysecond hand as much as possible.

I’m a big fan of filling up a water pitcher while I’m waiting for hot water. Then, I use that water later for whatever…the dog, the plants, to fill up the teakettle, etc.

I recycle my aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass. I was really surprised to see how much of my trash is recycleable.

among many other things, we live by the old hippie adage “if it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.” you might think it’s gross, but it’s a great way to save enormous amounts of water.

I do a LOT. But, the most recent thing I did I think no one thinks about as being enviromentally consious, especially since we live in a water shed, is keeping you animals waste out of the ground or landfills by toilet training them. I taught my cat to use the potty. Now I save on having kitty litter, or the paper bags and plasitc containers it comes in. If you don’t have to buy it, you don’t have to dispose of it. Plus it saves from the “used” materials from being dumped or even having kitty using my garden as her own “toilet”, thus keeping it from going into the ground water inside the watershed.
It is just one of many things I dol

I make the world a greener place by using non-toxic forms of pest/weed control in my garden. For instance, I use coffee grounds to deter slugs.

We do quite a bit. We recycle everything we can (plastics, tin, aluminum, cardboard, glass, paper). We also have a rain barrel for watering our garden and compost our kitchen and yard scrapes. We installed low flow shower heads and use energy efficient light bulbs. We stopped buying paper towels and napkins and use cloth. We cloth diaper our kiddo too! In the summer time, we grow our own vegetables or try to buy at the farmer’s market. We also donate unwanted stuff to goodwill and freecycle. Of course, I use my own bags at the store!
