leather daddy

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

My dad has a Nikon Rangefinder SLR from the 1950s that I love. The camera has a snap-on leather case that wraps around the body of the camera, with a drop flap to uncover the lens. The extra lenses are stored in leather cylinders that resemble mini thermoses. Today’s digital SLRs don’t even come close to the class and style of the vintage models, but this handmade leather camera bag at least wins you back a few cool points.

no hard edges

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Parenting a toddler is an exercise in spotting potential hazards in every room you enter. Sharp edges, edible objects, power outlets, anything breakable, anything climbable, anything electronic, anything white… I spied this hand-carved accent table and immediately was smitten for its lack of corners.

tea for two

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

I most certainly do not need any more ceramics in my household, but if I were in the market for a teapot, I would choose one of these. They are handmade in Japan, and molded from gourds and coconuts to give each piece a unique and natural shape. Lovely.

daily affirmation

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Self-help books… Therapy… Fortune teller… No need. Just slip this little trinket on your finger and when life’s quandaries trip you up, look down. Should I take the leap? Oui! Will I succeed? Oui! Do I need these shoes? Oui!

stumping for love

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

I guess I’m a sucker for old-fashioned romance, because I melted when I saw this personalized stump ring. It reminds me of young love on a breezy summer’s day, carving initials into an old oak tree in a meadow… which is so far from my present reality (the daily grind of family life in the city) that it makes me laugh at my own corny nostalgia. Oh well, at least a girl can dream.
