monkey on your back

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Curious George is in heavy rotation these days at our house. Luckily the books are a fun read, and plentiful. We own a couple, but the good old public library is a godsend when you can’t bear to read the same pages again and again. And again.

george and martha, forever

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

My son is a huge reader. So when my mom was planning to come down for his birthday, I asked her to try and dig up some of my old books so that I could share them with him. On the top of my list were George and Martha, a series about a pair of hippos who are best friends. Reading through these books again as an adult, I realize how weird, and funny, and sweet they are. Best of all, they make my little one laugh, too.

bookclub rules

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

I recently joined a bookclub with some friends at work. It’s been on my list of things to do for years, and I’m so glad I’m finally making it happen. This month’s pick is Why We Broke Up, by Daniel Handler, with illustrations by the amazing Maira Kalman. I can’t wait to disappear into it.

rest easy

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

It’s a reading lamp. And a book rest. That looks like a little house on your bedside table. I want.

judging the book by its cover: kindle vs nook

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

I own neither a Kindle nor a Nook, which is a remarkable feat of endurance and restraint, considering that I was an English major and still really, really like to read.

While reading this NPR comparison of the two devices, I detoured into land of e-book covers.  Jonathan Adler’s bold ampersand sheathes the Nook, while Etsy’s pretty much got the Kindle covered:  check out this adorably bookish hardback case.

So help me out, dear readers; if I take the plunge, which e-reader should I get?

(ETA: for an interesting financial consideration of e-books vs the paper versions, click here.)
