from our friends at TheFind: josh jakus 6-pack coasters

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

jake-jakus-coastersInspired by American pop culture, Josh Jakus 6-Pack Coasters are a nod to the conventional soda can 6-pack. The coasters are a fun and modern design made of recycled rubber. There are six coasters in a set and you can place them back into their rings for storage. The black coasters are made 100% of recycled tires and the colored rubber is 30% post-industrial waste. The functional design of the coasters are part of Josh Jakus‘ vision to create simple, elegant and whimsical every day objects. The California-based designer’s home accessories are not only aesthetically pleasing, but sustainably produced as well. Jakus aims to use recycled or excess materials in his products when possible and using production methods, which achieve the highest yield. The products are made in the USA in small batches to meet consumer demand.

from our friends at TheFind: small LOVE journal with silver leather

Friday, November 20th, 2009

love-notebookThe limited edition “LOVE” journal from Dogeared Jewels & Gifts is a gem of a notebook bound in re-purposed leather. Inside you’ll find 36 recycled paper pages to inscribe with love notes, shopping lists, or perhaps your latest and greatest brainstorm. The LOVE debossed logo is hand crafted in California. Each journal is different, depending on the leather color and comes wrapped in brown kraft paper. And how can you resist the silver leather? It is perfect for a holiday gift and very stylish as well. The LOVE journal also comes in natural, gold, plum, and moss. Be careful not to get the leather cover wet, it will age the leather prematurely. Otherwise, this beautiful little book should last for many years to come.

from our friends at TheFind: the watchword is whimsy – John Derian domed cake stand

Friday, November 13th, 2009

john-derian-domed-cake-stanI have been a fan of John Derian ever since spotting his delicately decoupaged glass trays and paperweights at Chelsea Passage in Barneys NY. The lovely vintage books and ephemera Derian uses are his signature decoupage style. Many of the images used by Derian are antique or vintage book plates featuring botanical and scientific illustrations. I happened upon this lovely domed cake stand – “White Floral” because of its delicate silhouette enclosing what looks like a white bouquet of hydrangea and gardenia. It is an everlasting and beautiful collection of white flowers under which to hide a pretty princess birthday cake or coconut cupcakes!

from our friends at TheFind: corn on the cob made easy – baby butter corn picks

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

butterbaby-corn-holdersAlmost every weekend this past summer our family ate corn on the cob. My toddler daughter loves corn and gets a kick out of eating it typewriter style. I found these adorable Butter Baby Corn Picks that make eating corn easy and fun for little hands. I love that my daughter’s hands don’t get buttery and sticky and that she no longer drops her corn onto the floor. The picks come in sets of four including a pair of yellow, pink, green and blue.

These corn picks also interlock for easy and safe storage and I just put them in the top utensil rack of my Miele dishwasher for easy clean up.

from our friends at TheFind: eco-friendly original milk paint

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Such a great idea!milk-paint-armoire

We recently refinished an armoire for my daughter’s room. One concern I had was the off gassing and VOC in many paint finishes. I was thrilled to find “Original Milk Paint” in a neighborhood store selling bookshelves. Milk paint is obviously made from milk, it comes in a powder form and all you do is add water and mix. It is environmentally safe and does not give off any odors. The finish is transparent and gives furniture or walls a slightly aged appearance with a bit of transparency. The ingredients in the paint include: milk protein, lime, clay, and earth pigments such as ochre, umber, iron oxide, lampblack. The lime is alkaline (toxic) in powder form but becomes totally inert when mixed with the slightly acid milk. There is no lead, chemical preservatives, or fungicides. Milk paint contains no hydrocarbons or any other petroleum derivatives. We are thrilled with the results and my husband spent one entire weekend painting the armoire, as it needed two coats. I also plan to apply a paste wax finish to protect the paint and give it a pretty and subtle sheen. I choose Clapham’s Beeswax Polish. It is made in Canada with an old family recipe; museums and fine furniture refinishers use it. Best of all it has a slight lavender scent, but also comes in unscented if you are adverse to lavender.
