Maybe it was the recession, or maybe I just got lucky, but holiday travel was surprisingly mellow this year. Lines were short, departures were on time, flights were smooth, and the toddler was well-behaved. It made me think I should fly more often, maybe even get some stylish luggage tags.

I have to give a shoutout to the condos we stayed in on Maui. This was our first resort vacation with a toddler, and it was fabulous. Kiddie pool with a pirate ship, full kitchen and washer-dryer in the room, and a morning yoga class on the beach for mom (babysitter not included… thanks, dad!). Not cheap, but well worth it in my book.

ready for takeoff

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Last week, my husband’s cousin from England visited us with her family. I nearly keeled over listening to their travel tales—4-hour bus ride, 11-hour flight, 2 hours in customs—with a preschooler and toddler. OMG. Talk about superhuman parenting. Even if I did have one of these cool and adorable kiddie travel pillows, I still don’t think I’m up for that trip.

rolling rolling rolling

I am dreading holiday travel this year. As if a 5-hour flight with a squirmy baby wasn’t daunting enough, we’ll be fighting holiday crowds and gambling with east-coast winter weather. Browsing suitcases today, I stumbled upon this lovely Diane Von Furstenberg gem and decided that the orange and snakeskin combo might numb the pain. Just a little.

the bottomless pit

ame-and-lulu-cabo-weekender-duffelI am not a light packer.  When my best friend came to visit me in NYC for a weekend, with only the canvas backpack she carried on the plane, I was appalled.  Had she brought two emergency pairs of undergarments, an extra pair of jeans (they do get smelly, you know), and the flip-flops you never know you need until you arrive?  Doubtful.

In my old age, as more of a example to my two girls than an attempt to curb my profligate packing, I am attempting to travel light.  Which is why I prefer soft bags, that have more give for those extra pairs of socks that will come in so handy when it’s 47 degrees in your hotel room.  Ame and Lulu’s bags fit the bill:  made of strong material in patterns that hide inevitable travel smut, they are positively cavernous inside.

Translation:  they can hold three days of clothes for me and my girls.  My husband?  He’s on his own.
