from our friends at TheFind: modern nightlights for peaceful slumber

Friday, October 16th, 2009

kids-nightlightsNow that my daughter is sleeping in a big-girl bed, we are in need of a newer grown up modern nightlight. The room is a fusion of vintage family heirlooms and modern storage pieces and a “Woodland” area rug from Pottery Barn Kids. I found three lamps/nightlights that put off a subtle glow to keep the room lit at night yet promote peaceful slumber through the night.

I love the adorable house design of the OXO Candela Roomi (top left, $29.99 at Amazon.com) because it is two lights in one. The unit’s charger has a luminescent panel that’s always lit, and the lamp lights up if the power goes out. The rechargeable lamp stays lit for up to 8 hours and is cool to the touch. Next the Grobag Egg Color Changing Thermometer ($24.99 at BabiesRUs) is an egg shaped nightlight that changes colors according to the current temperature in the room. The smart Grobag Egg nightlight glows red when it’s too hot, blue when it’s too cold, and yellow when it’s just right. I’m sure that all kids will get a kick out of the changing colors of this light as well. Another light that would be a sure fire hit at my house is the MyPetLamp Dachshund by Offi (bottom, $59 at RacksandStands.com). All kids go through an obsession with pets and my daughter is in that stage right now. A cute little puppy would be the perfect friend to keep her safe and secure at night.

all drains lead to the ocean

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

alligetterThis week at our house, one of my daughter’s fish fought the garbage disposal in a battle as sordid as it was strange.  (The details are too depressing and guilt-laden to even recount; let’s just say that thanks to Finding Nemo–”All drains lead to the ocean, kid”–my three-year-old thinks that her suckerfish really, really wanted to get back to its mommy and daddy.)

If only we had the Alligetter, whose built-in light and narrow design could have gone where my fingers wouldn’t.  Its tag line could easily be “The Alligetter:  Saving The World From Sink Sushi.”

kuhn-rikon-super-sharp-colori-paring-knifeMy blue Kuhn Rikon is the best knife I own.  I use it for chopping veggies, slicing meat, and chasing small feral animals out of the backyard.

(I wield the blue.  It is pretty.  And in two years of laborious use, the color has yet to chip.)

hot hot heat week: dry season

Monday, July 6th, 2009

lillian-vernon-beach-towelI’ve gotten a few requests to keep posting objects of summer fun, so here we go for week two of hot hot heat:

Shockingly, like many grossly pregnant people with small children, we’re headed for the beach for our vacay; I’m taking this towel along with me, which remains attached to your chair as you’re digging through its three pockets for extra sunscreen/sand shovels/dignity.  Plus, it’s monogrammable, which means no one will dare make off with it when you’re running after the kids.

bushnell-gps-backtrack-personal-locatorThanks to now-ubiquitous navigation systems, you can have a creepy lady-voice direct you to the nearest Starbucks with a few flicks of a button.

But what about those poor people who can’t even nav their way to their parking spot at the mall, or shudder at the idea of making their way to a stadium bathroom, then back to their seat?

Hold your pee no longer:  this Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Navigator will be your compass.  Just mark your current and desired locations on the handheld device, and the BackTrack will give you directions and distance from where you are to where you need to be.  No more frantic phone calls from the toilet, or riding with Paul Blart Mall Cop until your find your car.
