leather daddy

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

My dad has a Nikon Rangefinder SLR from the 1950s that I love. The camera has a snap-on leather case that wraps around the body of the camera, with a drop flap to uncover the lens. The extra lenses are stored in leather cylinders that resemble mini thermoses. Today’s digital SLRs don’t even come close to the class and style of the vintage models, but this handmade leather camera bag at least wins you back a few cool points.

study hall

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

This vintage card catalog made me time-warp back to high school study halls. I can only hazily remember those hours of doodling in the margins of spiral notebooks, running a yellow highlighter over passages of text, and tapping equations into a scientific calculator whose buttons would baffle me today. But the thought of sitting at a desk in a library for an hour with no electronic distractions seems so incredibly soothing and peaceful to me now. Wow, I really need to put away the iPhone.

tiny baubles

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Last weekend was the Bazaar Bizarre craft fair in San Francisco. There was a ton of crafty goodness to browse, and I knocked a few more names off of my holiday gift-list. Mother-in-law? Check. Sister-in-law? Check. And for myself? Um, check, check, check. I couldn’t help it. The lovely up-cycled jewelry by Cara Lyndon was my downfall. Tell me you could resist this gold necklace with vintage brass lockets? I bet you can’t.

you spin me right round, baby

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

I hereby break my solemn vow to ban all music-playing toys from my household for the reissue of the 1971 classic Fisher Price Record Player. I adored this toy as a kid, and the marketing brains at Fisher Price know it, too. Re-releasing their vintage toys to cash in on Gen-X nostalgia? Freakin’ genius!

a penny for your thoughts

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

This silk pillow from Ferm Living is the latest addition to my couch. The classic silhouette of the penny-farthing adds a little vintage twist to the room, while  the crisp black and white graphics pack a modern punch.
